Eco Clarity wins drainage innovation award

Eco Clarity Circular Water Economy

Leading green technology company, Eco Clarity, has been recognised for its groundbreaking FOG (fat, oil and grease) management solution by scooping the prestigious innovation award at the National Drainage Awards in London.

Sustainable solution

The judges praised Eco Clarity’s breakthrough service and technology, which collects problematic FOG waste and converts it into a sustainable source of renewable energy.

Chris Clemes, founder and chief executive of Eco Clarity said, “This achievement not only highlights Eco Clarity’s commitment to revolutionising the industry but also recognises the excellent work that so many contractors carry out day in day, as well as the power of collaboration in bringing about much-needed change across the water sector and supply chain.”

Untreated FOG can be highly detrimental, causing blockages in sewerage networks, polluting the environment, and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Eco Clarity’s unique approach offers a perfect circular economy solution, benefiting stakeholders across industry, society and the environment.

Breakthrough innovation

The company’s breakthrough innovation comprises two core initiatives – a patented separation technology and a network of FOG Recovery Hubs accessible by liquid waste tankers. The system enables liquid FOG waste collected from commercial kitchens to be separated before it enters the wastewater system or reaches the environment, becoming problematic.

The cleaned water can be reused or safely returned to the effluent stream. The recovered, consolidated FOG becomes a raw material that can be used to produce biodiesel for vehicle fuel. The Hub’s efficient system uses just 25% of the energy typically used in similar processes, with temperatures never exceeding 60oC.

Powerful partnerships

Eco Clarity has gone beyond best practice by developing collaborative initiatives across multiple partners and sectors, including water, waste, energy and hospitality. The company is liaising with the Environment Agency to speed up permitting of suitable sites for FOG Recovery Hubs.

The technology is being upgraded continually, with its effectiveness continuously monitored. It has been scaled to meet the requirements of different stakeholders. Its modular construction makes it easy to install onsite. Sensor technology is making it easy to quantify the FOG content of loads and keep customers informed for billing and to evidence green credentials.

The future of FOG

Long-standing challenges like FOG and fatbergs in sewers require not only innovative technologies, but innovative business models that work for all stakeholders. By fostering multiple partnerships, Eco Clarity’s FOG-to-fuel solution can be scaled-up and implemented nationally and internationally, promoting a more sustainable and efficient wastewater management system for the future.

“Our combination of an innovative separation technology and circular-economy model for resource capture and reuse is unique, but I firmly believe that we are on the right path, and through strong partnerships we can crack this widespread and costly challenge for once and for all,” added Clemes.

Eco Clarity envisions far-reaching applications for this technology. In the future, water companies could generate biodiesel from their own waste to power their fleets. Vehicles of all types could be fueled by biodiesel derived from domestic and commercial kitchen waste. Even individuals could contribute by bringing their used fat, oil and grease waste to convenient recycling banks for conversion into clean fuel.

Sustainability Champion: Clearway Environmental

EcoClarity Kitchen Waste Disposal

At EcoClarity, we’re passionate about partnering with local businesses to drive positive environmental change. Today, we’re excited to spotlight Clearway Environmental, a Hull-based company making a significant impact in sustainable waste management. Clearway has shown a strong commitment to reducing their carbon footprint by responsibly managing fat, oil, and grease (FOG) waste with us.

Here’s the impact Clearway achieved in October

  • By managing FOG waste sustainably, Clearway prevented nearly 5,500 kg of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. That’s equivalent to planting 90 new trees and letting them grow for 10 years, or avoiding the emissions of nearly 14,000 miles in an average petrol-fuelled car on Hull’s roads.
  • Clearway went beyond simple disposal by converting over two tonnes of FOG waste into biodiesel feedstock. This biodiesel produces up to 87% less carbon than traditional fossil fuels, supporting the global push for cleaner energy alternatives.

Strength in local partnerships

As two Hull-based companies, EcoClarity and Clearway Environmental share a vision for our city’s future: a cleaner, greener Hull. Working together on sustainable waste management allows us to contribute to Hull’s environmental goals and explore how local businesses can support each other in building a circular economy. By transforming waste into a resource, we’re taking small but meaningful steps toward closing the loop on waste management and creating lasting value for the community.

Supporting Unblocktober 2024

EcoClarity Kitchen Waste Disposal

EcoClarity is proud to support Unblocktober, the UK’s annual month-long campaign dedicated to improving the health of our drains and environment. The campaign encourages individuals and businesses to adopt better waste management habits, with a particular focus on preventing harmful substances like fat, oil and grease (FOG) from entering our drainage systems.

FOG can accumulate in sewers, leading to challenges such as blockages and “fatbergs.” However, by implementing effective FOG management and sustainable disposal, businesses can protect their operations and contribute to environmental protection by preventing this waste from entering sewers and converting it into valuable resources.

Throughout Unblocktober, we are engaging with businesses and communities to highlight the importance of responsible FOG disposal. With the right practices, we can prevent blockages, protect our waterways, and contribute to a more sustainable future.

We encourage everyone to participate in Unblocktober and discover how small changes can make a big difference.

Visit the Unblocktober website to learn more about the campaign and how you can get involved.

Hull treatment site turning fats into fuel

EcoClarity our partners wastewater treatment plants hauliers food service establishments

The ‘end goal’ is to fish fatbergs out of sewers and turn them into fuel for vans

Hull is at the centre of a pioneering trial to transform waste oils that can form sewer-clogging fatbergs into a sustainable fuel.

The project captures harmful fat, oil, and grease before it can enter the waste system. It then turns the substances into biodiesel, a more sustainable fuel type than traditional diesel.

EcoClarity business development manager Laura Su says she is proud that Hull is at the forefront of trialling this technology, which has been in development for a decade.

Laura said: “Hull has a rich industrial heritage, and now it’s becoming a hub for sustainable innovation. We’re proud to be part of a solution that takes something harmful, like fat, oil, and grease, and gives it new life as a high-quality fuel.”

An estimated 200,000 fatbergs occur annually across the UK, requiring costly removal and increased maintenance costs for water companies such as Yorkshire Water.

Installed at Yorkshire Water’s Hull wastewater treatment site in Salt End Chemical Park, EcoClarity’s system separates problematic fats from wastewater and recovers a valuable energy resource for biodiesel production, while returning safe water to the environment.

Commercial kitchens and food processing facilities are some of the biggest contributors to fats and oils in sewers. Disposal of these greasy, clog-forming substances has long posed a challenge to the water sector.

Laura, who grew up in Hull and studied at the university too, added: “We’ve got a unique place in the market, and this partnership with Yorkshire Water is allowing us to lead the way.

“There’s a huge food and beverage industry in Hull that we really want to tap into. Almost every factory is producing these substances and we can stop them reaching the sewer and then give them a new lease of life as more sustainable fuel ‘it’s a win win’.”

Alongside their partnership with Yorkshire Water, EcoClarity have also recently partnered with Big Table Group, who operate big-name restaurants such as Bella Italia, Las Iguanas and Frankie & Benny’s, to trial recycling of waste from grease recovery units in their commercial kitchens.

Laura added: “We’re working with local food and beverage industries in Hull to create a circular economy. These businesses are generating the waste, and now they can help turn it into something valuable.

“This kind of innovative, sustainable solution is typical of Hull as a city. This project is about more than cleaning up the sewers; it’s about creating opportunities for local businesses and jobs in Hull and beyond.”

Yorkshire Water’s waste services manager James Gudgeon welcomed the partnership with EcoClarity: “Water companies can spend a significant amount of money on staff and equipment costs to remove FOG from our sewers and send it to landfill” which also has an environmental impact.

“We are working with EcoClarity towards the potential nirvana of being able to harvest the FOG from our sewer network and turn it into biodiesel that fuels our vans. That’s the end goal.”

Further EcoClarity hubs are being planned by Yorkshire Water, with Knostrop wastewater treatment works in Leeds next on the list.
